Certified professional Midwife, licensed midwife

Hello! I am Melissa Matus. I grew up surrounded by nurses and doctors in my family and with a very “western” view of healthcare. It was not until I saw “The Business of Being Born” (circa 2010) that I realized midwives were still a thing! After learning about midwives and doulas, this approach rang true with me. I knew I wanted to have unmedicated births, one day, surrounded by women who could support me and I knew I would do birth work in some capacity later in life...

Fast forward a few years and I became trained as a doula. After working with high school students for 5 years with YoungLife, I moved to Texas from Louisiana to get hitched to my husband, Chewy. It was then that I began working as a doula here in DFW where most of my clients gave birth in the hospital.  However, a few used midwives at home or at free standing birth centers and I began to witness a whole new world. I loved it!

One fateful night, I was a doula for a birth at Gentle Beginnings and the rest is history. After that birth I left and began entertaining the thought of becoming a midwife. With the encouragement and support of my husband, I began my apprenticeship under Michele Massey CPM, LM in January 2016.

I gave birth to my first born in April of this year, a little girl named Lucille. She was born at home, in our bed, and it was the most empowering and wildest ride of my life. Being her mother is my greatest joy and birthing her changed me forever. Birth is an absolute miracle. Every. Single. Time.

Midwifery care is holistic. We look at the whole person, recognizing that the mind, body, and spirit are connected. We acknowledge that the mother and baby are a unit. The health and well being of one directly affects the other and we treat them as such.

I would love the opportunity to meet you face to face and answer any questions that you have.

The childbearing year is an incredible time for women and for families and it would be my honor to journey along with you.
